4/26 6th Philly Collaboration of Educators; Edwin Mayorga Keynote

 Philly educators join us at the sixth annual Collaboration of Educators!

On Tuesday April 26th, 2016 educators of all stripes will gather for critical, meaningful, grassroots staff-led workshops and meetings at this opportunity for professional development for and by educators at Central High School and McCall (K-8)

The Collaboration of Educators (#PhillyEdCollab) is the outcome of the collective knowledge and creativity of Philadelphia educators, who envisioned a series of grassroots events that are comprised of teacher/staff-led interdisciplinary, content-area, and technology workshops. 

#CritEdPol is delighted to share that this year’s Collab Keynote speaker will be #CritEdPol director Edwin Mayorga:

Mayorga_headshot_WHYY“In the thick of it: Transforming our classrooms, transforming our city”

Taking stock of the racial, economic and political conditions that shape education in Philadelphia, the question that this keynote will address is: What is to be done? More specifically, what are we [educators, students, families, policy makers, researchers, etc.] to do? Inspired by this question, I propose that we take a community centered, participatory, approach to transforming classrooms, schools, and the city. In short, I am proposing a framework of “thick participation” as both a means and ends to imagining and fighting for a more just school system and a more just city. I will take participants through different aspects of the “thick participation” framework discussing, among other things, participatory classrooms and “community schools” as transformative strategies.
