Looking at House and Senate Bills amending ESEA

This is the Accessible Policy Assignment

Look through the table of contents of either the Senate or the Houses current bills for amending ESEA

Choose a Title of ESEA that you would like to look at more closely.  Then look at the amendments proposed in that same title in SB1177 and HR5. Ask yourself what are the goal(s) of the Title? What words/language is used to support that goal? How do the goals and the language of the Title in ESEA compare to what is recommended in SB 1177 and HR 5.

For example, you could choose Title I and look at Title I across the proposed bills.

Writing Assignment

After looking through the materials please do the following:

Write a description of that particular ESEA Title that a broader audience could understand. Given that some Titles are longer than others, you should focus on highlighting three key points from that Title. (1 to 2 pages)

Then describe the proposed SB 1177 and HR 5 amendments for a broader audience. (1 to 2 pages)

Third, given what you have thought about in this exercise discuss your view on the ESEA Title.  What do you think we should keep, what you found problematic, or what raised questions for you. (1 to 2 pages)

Finally, discuss your views on the changes proposed by the two bills. Please also integrate a concept or theoretical framework from our readings or classroom discussion when you are analyzing these proposed changes. Somethings to consider:  Do you think any of the proposed changes provide improvements, if so which ones and why? If there is something that actually seems troubling identify what it is and explain why you find that particular part of the amendment troubling. (1 to 2 pages)
